Certifications

Course Overview

For those wanting to pursue additional technical training, we offer the possibility of getting several outdoor certifications in Wilderness First Aid, Swift water rescue, Flat water Canoeing, Leave No Trace trainer, VHF radio licence and Sea kayaking skills. The potential exists to also include or substitute other certifications such as an AST-1 avalanche course, depending on demand and instructor availability. These certifications are optional for students and come at an additional cost. Will be discussed upon enrolment in the Ascent program.

remote first aid

A Wilderness First Aid course can be a valuable asset in the the event of an illness or injury in the backcountry. This two day course will give you the training and know how to deal with many injuries common in the wilderness and increase your confidence on the trail.

swift water safety Rescue level 1

This foundational rescue training course brings boaters, outdoor enthusiasts and recreation leaders up to speed on the essential safety knowledge and skill to understand and avoid the hazards associated with Swiftwater, all developed in a practical river environment.

Lakewater Canoeing

On this course, you’ll be instructed on all the necessary skills to get your basic & advanced tandem certifications, as you learn everything from the different types of canoes, to a variety of paddling strokes, to practicing canoe rescue techniques.


Leave No Trace (LNT) Trainer

Intended for outdoor recreation users who want to reduce their impact on the environment, you will gain a better understanding of the seven principles of Leave No Trace, and as a graduate of this program, you will be able to offer LNT awareness workshops to others. 

VHF Radio Operator

The Maritime Radio Course is an important certification for those boating in coastal waters.  Upon the completion of the course and exam, you will obtain the paperwork that entitles you to operate a VHF Marine Band Radio on a voluntarily fitted vessel.

Sea Kayaking skills Level 1

This technical workshop and training course will give you the hands on experience and certification to help assist in developing your sea kayaking skills and cover topics such a paddling strokes, wet exits, self rescues, and planning short day trips.


Ice safety rescue

This is a very practical course for the ice environment. It is geared for students to understand and avoid the hazards associated in static/flat ice situations. This program is run by Rescue Canada, a leader in the rescue field.


Avalanche AST-1

This Avalanche training brings outdoor enthusiasts up to speed on the essential safety knowledge and skills to travel and camp in the backcountry during the winter. With practice, you’ll be able to increase your safety margins and enjoy some peace of mind on your next adventures in the mountains.
